Safety Pays: Selecting the Correct Infant Crib Bedding
Shopping online for baby bedding brings a vast selection. This can be great when you know what you want and you’re just trying to find it. But if you haven’t already got a clear picture of what you’re looking for, shopping online can actually confuse you even more. If you want animals, you can find everything from a caterpillar baby crib bedding set to safari themes. If it’s angels you’re looking for, be prepared to spend some time on your search - there are hundreds of different choices. For extremely popular themes (think Winnie the Pooh or Noah’s Ark), the number of choices can start to get ridiculous.
Whether it’s boy nursery bedding or baby girl, when you see all the super-cute options you have, you may be tempted to overspend or break your budget. To be a bit blunt, that designer bedding set you paid $1000 for is going to go through the same spitup and diaper leaks as a $200 set. So here are a few suggestions for things your baby will need:
- Bumper pads have become somewhat controversial, as there is some evidence that they may do more harm than good. Crib bumpers are a potential cause of suffocation, because they can loosen and cover baby’s face. Until his or her first birthday, it is highly recommended to keep bumpers (and any other loose or unnecessary bedding) out of your child’s crib. But for anyone who decides to put them in anyway, at least make sure that the ties are short, on the outside of the crib, and very tightly tied.
- Crib sheets consist of just a fitted sheet. There is no flat sheet and no pillowcase, because young babies really don’t need them. When buying crib sheets, make sure they fit your mattress properly. If they are too big or too small, they may come free from the mattress and pose a suffocation risk. White sheets are a definite no - babies are messy and your white sheets won’t stay white for long. A waterproof mattress cover is a good idea, too.
- Loose blankets are a safety hazard for babies under one, so stick to sleep sacks or warm pajamas instead. Stuffed animals and pillows are dangerous so take them out of the crib.
When you’re looking at a crib set, first make sure it’s safe. With so many options available, you can still find something adorable.
