Bedding Sets and Baby Safeguards

It only makes sense that when you shop for your baby’s crib, you’ll be looking for bedding, too. The majority of crib bedding sets have from 4 up to 10 pieces included, but how many of those should you actually use? Bare is best when it comes to baby bedding: pediatricians recommend keeping all unnecessary bedding out of the crib. Crib sets are cute, but since most of the pieces are unnecessary, it’s much better to spend your money on some durable, comfortable crib sheets instead.

Neither bumper pads nor comforters are recommended for newborns, as they both increase the risk of suffocation. Swaddling blankets or sleep sacks are the best alternative to loose blankets and quilts. Sleep sacks are worn like clothing, but have a closed “bag” at the legs to keep baby warm. Swaddling blankets have also come a long way, with many products that aid in getting a snug fit. Swaddling can be an excellent way to help a newborn sleep, but it is generally not recommended beyond 6 weeks because of fears it can hinder hip development. You will be holding your baby a lot, so you might still want a blanket or comforter for those times, especially if you’ve had a winter baby. But remove the comforter before baby goes into the crib.

You might be considering a sleep wedge for your baby. After all, it’s supposed to reduce the risk of SIDS, something most new parents worry about. Keep in mind, though, that babies can’t roll over until they are about 6 months old, at which point tummy-sleeping no longer seems to cause the same risk of SIDS. You should also realize that these foam wedges are themselves soft bedding, which is not recommended by most pediatricians for very young babies.

Some of the items in a bedding set may not even be bedding - window valances or diaper stackers, for example. If you’re on a strict budget, skip these. There are mostly decorative and really won’t be missed.

If you really care about the look of the nursery (and who doesn’t?), then thing about unisex crib bedding like a Hot Cocoa crib set. {It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.}
